Some twenty kilometres from the Château du Creux, Tronçais Forest unfolds its 10,600 hectares of oaks. A walk not to be missed.
A cathedral of oaks
Tronçais is one of the finest oak groves in Europe. Over more than ten thousand hectares, even-aged stands raise their trunks like columns. Some oaks are over three centuries old and bear names.
A forest shaped by history
In the 17th century, Colbert reorganised the forest to supply the kingdom’s naval timber. This legacy explains the exceptional quality of Tronçais oak, today prized for fine cooperage.
What to do there
Hiking trails and mountain-bike tracks criss-cross the massif. You can watch deer and boar at dusk, pick mushrooms in autumn, and swim in summer in the Saint-Bonnet and Pirot ponds.
From the château
