By car

The most direct route

From Paris, allow about three hours’ drive for 290 kilometres, on the A71 motorway to exit 11 “Montluçon”, then departmental roads to Vallon-en-Sully. From Lyon, the journey takes about two hours for 220 kilometres. These two routes make the château a fairly central stop for guests or participants coming from several regions of France, without either starting point having a clear advantage in travel time. Private parking on the estate saves looking for a space on arrival, including for a large group during a private hire.

By train or plane

The nearest stations

The nearest station is Vallon-en-Sully, five minutes from the château. Montluçon station is about 30 minutes’ drive away; Moulins and Vichy stations about an hour. For travel by air, Clermont-Ferrand airport is the most practical, about an hour and a quarter’s drive away. No regular bus line links these stations and this airport to the château: from Montluçon, Moulins, Vichy or Clermont-Ferrand, hiring a car or an organised transfer is needed. A transfer from the station can be arranged on request, to be planned in particular for a group arriving together for a wedding or a retreat.

Navigation

GPS landmarks and navigation

The château’s GPS coordinates, 46.5167° N and 2.6000° E, work well with most navigation apps. The full postal address nevertheless remains the most reliable method to avoid confusion with a neighbouring hamlet: Château du Creux, 03190 Vallon-en-Sully. Some apps sometimes route you along a farm track rather than the main road in the last few kilometres; if in doubt, following the signs to the centre of Vallon-en-Sully remains the safest solution before heading to the estate, rather than blindly trusting the last turn suggested by the app.

From abroad

Coming from abroad

For guests coming from abroad, a Paris airport is generally the most practical point of entry into France, followed by the three-hour drive to the château or a train journey to Vallon-en-Sully, or to Montluçon, Moulins or Vichy and then a car. Clermont-Ferrand airport, smaller, mainly serves domestic flights and a few limited European routes, to be checked case by case depending on the period and the airline. For a wedding or a retreat bringing together international participants, arranging a common meeting point at the airport or the station, followed by a shared shuttle, greatly simplifies logistics compared with staggered individual arrivals.

Surroundings

Near the château

The Tronçais forest, one of the finest oak forests in France, is about fifteen kilometres from the château, which allows guests arriving early or leaving late to combine the journey with a stop in the forest. The Hérisson waterfalls, further south, require a more substantial detour, best considered for a full day rather than as an add-on to a simple journey. These landmarks, more than the distance in kilometres alone, help you find your bearings in a rural territory where travel times depend more on the road taken than on the distance shown on a map, a point that also applies when organising an outing during your stay.
