The Fougières family came to Le Creux in 1519, through the marriage of Jeanne de La Faye to Gilbert de Fougières, who in 1546 acquired the land and lordship of Le Creux from his brother-in-law. His descendants kept it until the 19th century: in December 1837, Adélaïde-Hyacinthe de Fougières, Louis-Joseph’s only daughter, married the Marquis Christian de Nicolay, whose family still lives in the château. It was under their name, in the 1770s, that François-Marie de Fougières, sub-governor to the children of France, brought in Nicolas-Martial Foacier, who surrounded the château with pavilions and successive courtyards. Naming a room in their honour acknowledges more than three centuries at Le Creux, the longest period in the estate’s history under a single family name.
